The concept of eating not just to satisfy hunger, but to indulge in pleasure, dates back thousands of years. Across ancient Greece and Rome, lavish banquets and symposiums were social highlights, where guests sampled a variety of exquisite dishes while engaging in conversation and entertainment. In fact, the word “epicurean” itself comes from the Greek philosopher Epicurus, who believed that pleasure—especially the pleasure of good food and company—was essential to a happy life. Today, the spirit of those ancient gatherings lives on every time friends come together at a table to share a meal. But rather than the overwhelming feasts of old, there’s been a shift toward smaller, meticulously prepared plates. This is the essence of modern dining: not just eating, but savoring—lingering over flavours, textures, and the stories behind each dish.

The Black Urchin's, owner and operator Barrie Gunning, has been around in the entertainment and hospitality industry for nearly two decades now. Barrie started off in the underground entertainment scene back in London in 2008, with his underground club nights and supperclubs. Barrie is a peoples person, easy to get along with, with a positive and friendly persona and driven by his passions and love for living the good life. These traits made him popular and was the force behind the success of his supperclub in London, called Pop Up Barbados.
Fast forward to his return to his home Barbados after COVID, Barrie started a street food brand called Bad Guys, an instant hit on the West Coast, serving up some of the best tapas on the island. Being big on innovative ideas and elevated experiences, Barrie's style of cooking became more refined and spanning different countries and this gave rise to The Black Urchin. With that his supperclub concept was re-introduce here on the island, but it did not work as he expected. However, the brand remained a prominent private chef and gourmet catereing service.
Barrie says " What I found with the supperclub concept was that, the island don't have the numbers, also locals don't generally adapt to new concepts that easily, except for those that have travelled and may have experienced that concept and enjoyed it. Another thing I found was that, there was still enough interest to sustain the concept but the problems potential customers had were things such as, they couldn't make that date, the time didn't work for them, other friends/family weren't available, not everyone could have what was on the menu and location was sometiumes a problem. I really wanted this to work because I believe it's a great experience and adds variety to your going out options on the island. As a marketeer as well as entrepreneur, one of our skills is understanding the markets, finding gaps to fill and when met with challenges, find ways resolve those issues. It hit me , from customers feedback with my supperclubs I came up with a solution to resolve all the issues in one. Let the customers, choose the location, the date, the times, the menu, the entertainment that suits them. The experience itself, I will curate to their desire and it's totally exclusive to them."
