I am Barrie Gunning chef and owner of BadGuys BB and The Black Urchin, a qualified marketeer, entrepreneur and a self thought chef. I have a tremendous passion for authentic, vibrant and flavoursome cuisine with the use of only the freshest and the best quality ingredients. I took that passion and started a journey that will culminated something an experience that Barbadians and visitors to the island alike, would greatly appreciate. My goal is to capture the very essence of the real island lifestyle, the beauty, the smile of the people, the exotic flavours it offers and pass that to our customers on a plate or a well crafted cocktail.
BadGuys started it's journey in 2008 as Pop Up Barbados in East London, a bi-monthly supper-club in my apartment in Dalston, London, hosting 25 - 30 people. I went on to host guests pop-ups at trendy bars and event spaces in London as well as being one of the headliners for the popular Street Feast London, a night market for gourmet street food vendors catering to a packed crowd of up to 3000 foodies from all over the world. Pop Up Barbados captured media attention and was featured in many major newspapers such as The Guardian, The Telegraph on Sunday and food magazines plus many top food bloggers sites and journals which led to private supper-club bookings with even some famous celebrities in the UK.

In September 2020 I decided to return to my home, after 21 years living in Europe and gave birth to Bad Guys BB. Initially BadGuys started out as a very small Bajan street food pop up at my aunts' rumshop/mini-mart selling local rumshop eats. Although this was a confinement on what I had to offer it was where I wanted to start. However this quickly moved unto to being a pop up serving contemporary street food tapas at a West Coast cocktail bar.
The BadGuys brand name was develop to represent my street food offerings but over time and a constant drive to improve, street food became contemporary tapas and tacos and with that I wanted a brand that will better represent the quality and refinement of my product and services to my customers. To that I have created The Black Urchin. As of the 1st December 2023 I have now moved on from a pop up to having my own food bar serving some amazing gourmet cutters, bao buns with local fillings, homemade sourdough tacos and gourmet salads. Here you will find Paulina & I with a warm welcome, great customer service and a friendly conversation if we aren't too busy.
I take great pride in the ingredients we use to create our dishes. The fish and meat I source are free-range and/or organic and of the freshest and highest quality available on the island, sourced locally except for our prawns which are premium imports. Fish and seafood are bought from small sustainability conscious local fisherman and our meat from Peg Farm, a free-range, biodynamic and environmentally friendly farm and nature reserve. These standards don't decrease either with our other ingredients. We believe that with quality ingredients they either speak for themselves or compliment the dish further which offers our customers a fantastic and memorable food experience. This is what we are, an honest and passionate brand not just selling food for a profit but offering an experience, so come take this journey with us.
